I guess it depends on how you look at it. If you start counting from the date title changed into our name, it’s Day 19. If you start counting from the day we starting moving things into the house and sleeping there, it’s Day 13. I’m going to count from the date we got the keys. August 1. So, Day 14.
I went looking for my car last night. Under a lot of dust, bird crap and bug guts I found it. I had suspicions of it being white. I was right. Fun. We also got the lights that flank the garage. Michael installed them while I excavated my vehicle. They look awesome – very modern. We had purchased some at Expo Design last week, but then I found house numbers I liked and they didn’t coordinate with the lights so we’re going to return those lights. I then found cool lights at Lamps Plus that match the numbers. Even better was that they were on clearance. The porch light was installed a couple days ago but the garage lights had to be ordered and we received them yesterday. Maybe tonight I’ll install the new numbers.
Merlin is adjusting as dogs do. On Saturday we went to Ikea and left him home to see how he’d do. He chewed some of the cheap metal horizontal blinds. Although he got in big trouble, I didn’t really care because I’m replacing the window treatments anyway. On Sunday we decided to see how he would do if we left him access to only the garage and backyard. He barked and howled the whole time we were at Home Depot buying new toilets. Yesterday, we closed off the living room (the scene of the blind mangling), the spare bedrooms and hall bathroom. This left him access to the family room, kitchen, breakfast area and master bedroom. He did much better, only getting his paws on a roll of masking tape and mildly gnawing on it. So, this morning, we did the same thing and will see again. Michael took him to Fair Oaks Park this morning which is Merlin’s old haunt and a comfortable, familiar space. By the time they got home, he was tired and seemed glad to see Michael leave for work. This was a good sign and hopefully he’ll just sleep most of the day.
Our canary, Clyde, has adjusted most quickly and positively. His cage is positioned right in front of the family room window where he can see the backyard and olive trees. And although he’s started molting, he’s perpetually happy and singing all day and even into the evenings (ok, he wasn’t so happy when I had to catch him to clip his nails and he glared at me for a good two hours afterward until he got over it and tossed a song over as a truce). The only thing he doesn’t like it is the evil black shadow canary that vexes him and matches his every move each night when the sun goes down. Curse the wires of the cage that keep him from slamming through the glass to catch the blasted mocker!
What else… The TV is hung on the wall and off the fireplace. I got a new dresser and am putting it to good use. Michael will soon have his coordinating dresser (it was out of stock) and the boxes and bags in the bedroom will be no more. We installed two new toilets. A necessity not only because the old ones were, well, old and inefficient and ugly and dirty; but also because when the previous owner’s son-in-law reinstalled them after repairing the floor, he didn’t seat them properly and the hall bathroom was starting to smell because of it. Great job, dude. Who doesn’t love the smell of sewer gas in the summer?
I’ve filled out the “Just Moved” postcards for mailing so, if you’re on my list, watch your mail over the next week or so. Our home phone number stayed the same since we didn’t move outside the area covered by the C.O. and that makes for less hassles. We’re probably looking at having a housewarming party in October. I’m thinking of a 70’s theme the week before Halloween. Get your afros fluffed and leisure suits pressed. Slide on your platforms and get ready to disco!
