I am transferring to another department effective August 8. Finally I get to leave the office that's made me completely insane. Yes, I exaggerate - but only slightly (because I was slightly insane when I got there). The program where I currently work is being run by an incompetent moron who truly believes that she has done us a service by gracing us with her presence for the past 9 months. In reality, morale has plummeted, people are becoming ill and the union is involved. Too bad because nearly everyone there is pretty great (I say "nearly" because of course we have our odd-balls, like the 82-year-old woman who refuses to retire and will probably be found in her office one Monday morning having passed-on peacefully in her sleep the previous Friday afternoon).
Nonetheless, despite the current program administration making the work environment miserable, I still would have left. Admin work is not my bag, baby. And paperwork for the sake of paperwork just plain pisses me off. Not to mention I'm not compassionate enough to work for a human services department. I just don't have the patience to help someone who continually makes poor choices in their life and, rather than taking responsibility, relies on government services to provide for them. That's called enabling, folks. I won't do it.
So my new department not only doesn't help those who won't help themselves, it also strives to be more technologically advanced. What a concept! Who said cutting edge bureaucracy was an oxymoron? Ha! They are in the process of becoming as paperless as possible and having as much up-to-date equipment as they can manage. My job will be to trouble shoot and investigate problems as well as train those folks who are desperately holding on the 1980's for dear life. I will pry their atrophied fingers away from the old and lead them gently into the new. I could not be more excited as this is something that I enjoy. I really do like showing people that there is a better and more efficient way of doing something; not just because I get to say "I told you so," but also because the end result is a much happier place to be. People tend to be more productive and have fewer problems and like their jobs more.
My soon-to-be-previous coworkers are already planning my send off, though they're calling it a wake. The charges from MIS will go up after I leave though it will remind them how much they really did need me. And my staff will have a new, probably more rigid supervisor. The program will go on as it has. I get to move on and move forward.
